RENEE FAIRLIE

TACHRIAN AFGHAN HOUNDS

2nd July 2006

Renee was a lovely gentle lady who like most of us loved animals. When she left school she wanted to become a vet but money was tight in those days and the family couldn’t afford to pay for tuition, she became instead a kennel maid at the columbine kennels. When the war started she joined the WAAFS and became a mechanic.

The first dog she owned was a cairn terrier which much to the new husband’s dismay shared their honeymoon! She was a founder member of the Afghan Hound Club of Scotland eventually becoming president.

Renee’s Affix was Tachrian and in her time she owned approximately 6 Affies amongst which were an Amudarya, a Shanshu and the last being a Tarril, she had judged several times at C.C level and was also president of the Dundee canine club. She moved South a few years ago to be nearer her family. The last dog she owned was an old Pekinese she took in when the owner died, and we believe that little chap passed on earlier this year and if my memory serves was 17 years old, they had about 4-5 years together and gave Renee much pleasure and I’m sure the old dog had much pleasure too, great company for each other.

Jill Knight-Messenger has asked me to post: It is with deep regret that I have to inform you that Renee Fairlie passed away today. Although Renee was a goodly age, her passing was sudden and unexpected, so there is to be an inquest. Jill will ask me to post funeral arrangements when known, after the inquest. Jill particularly asks that everyone respects the family's privacy at this time, so please do not call them for the present. Sincere condolences to the family, and a loss to the breed.

Hello Brian, I too had a phone call from Jill today, I am so saddened to hear that Rene is no longer with us ;a long time friend of mine, I shall miss her ; my condolences to her family ,a great loss to the breed, I well remember going to lunch with a few others and after lunch, out came the afghan memorabilia old photos, prize cards, etc and a good old yarn with talk of the old days, she liked a "puff" as she called it and before I gave up smoking she would say "shall we away outside for a puff Sue" we both also found we shared a love of Bombay Saphire (for the non drinkers it is an up market gin) I think maybe its a good job I didn’t know her when we were very young we could have got into a lot of trouble. During the last few years she took in an old Pekinese dog who needed a home and they were company for each other, I believe he’s been gone a few months, but I know he gave her much pleasure, I will always remember the glint in her eye and the chuckle in her voice. I am so sorry to hear about Renee. I only met her once a number of years ago now, when she was on the panel of an afghan seminar. She took the trouble to talk to me during lunch and I was struck by her lovely sense of humour and her gentleness. My sincere sympathies go to all her family and friends. Love Cathy Harding (Ashani)

Rene was indeed a lovely lady - one of a kind you don't come across too often sadly. Many of us in Scotland will be unable to make the service of thanksgiving on Monday, but we will be with her in thought. She was a very special person and it is a sad loss to the Afghan Hound fraternity. We will light a candle for her and celebrate her life - I think she would appreciate that. Kind regards
Audrey (Audihounds)
