Daisy was born on November 10, 1997, which is also the date of Brian’s father s birthday. She was one of a litter of three bitches and seven dogs out of UK/IR Ch Karaburan Jelly Roll Morton and Wilbus Kismet bred by Lesley and Alan Busby. Her brother Bryan, Ch Wilbus Libretto is also the wearer of a crown! The litter all had musical Kennel Club names, and as this is Brian’s other passion, we like to think that it was another little omen that steered her our way. Dee first saw a photograph of a tiny Daisy at a Southern Afghan Hound Club committee meeting and was struck by how much she resembled Ch Wilbus Fleur de Lys of Bowentree, snaffled the photo from Lesley and Alan and brought it to us.
When we went just to have a look, we drove from Swindon to East Sussex to collect Dee, then on to Kent. Not a short journey! We fell in love with Daisy, and after a round table agreed to have her in partnership. We also agreed there and then to keep both her pet and registered names as they were.
Daisy came to live with us at Numa, and was immediately accepted by our other four afghans. We had to look round for a ringcraft class for her, because Swindon DCS’s classes were on a night we could not attend. After attending a nearby class for less than two minutes (the sight of the trainer filling a water pistol put us right off!) we found Spire Dog Training Club in Swindon. Held at St Mark’s Church Hall, the hall is part of the church and had rubber matting down from wall to wall for dog training nights. It was an excellent environment for dog training. When the weather permitted, we were able to use the grassed area at the back of the church.
In 1998 Daisy was joint Pedigree Petfoods/Our Dogs Puppy Of the Year and the Harcourt-Brown Year Book Junior Points Trophy, although we never actually got our hands on the Harcourt-Brown trophy! In early 1999 she gained her Junior Warrant at Swindon DCS Open Show. Later that year she won the RBCC at the WAHC Championship Show under Pauline Mullins and RBIS on referee Jill Cross’s decision.
In 2000 at Paignton Ch Show she won her first CC under Di Cook. It wasn’t until 2003 that Daisy was to gain another RBCC, again under Pauline Mullins at the MAHC Championship Show. Later that year, another RBCC under Rose Boyd-Coates at the Houndshow. Elaine Wyatt awarded Daisy her 2nd BCC at Bournemouth 2003 at one of the hottest shows on record.
In 2004 Daisy won her fourth RBCC under Ann Mathers at the Hound Association of Scotland Championship Show. She received her crowning BCC at West of England Ladies Kennel Association Championship Show 2004 from Roy Metcalfe. Again, it was rather warm!
Daisy is a beautiful afghan hound, who has never once let us down when being shown. That’s not to say she can’t be a naughty little minx at times (she is also a champion food stealer).
