Alan Shipman's amazing fat sculpture

Photo's of an incredible model, made by Alan Shipman from the Spring 1977 SAC magazine.

Alan is a chef and competes in catering exhibitions as often as he is able. Last year he entered the Hotelympia Exhibition at Olympia with a fat or margarine carving (a model carved completely  out of a solid piece of fat) and won a silver medal)

This year he decided to enter the Bournemouth Food and Wine Festival and, after giving his subject great thought, decided to carve an Afghanistan Tribesman, with a couple of dogs and a dead deer. As Alan owns and shows Afghans himself he thought this would be a good subject. After many hours of working late to finish the model in time for the exhibition he had to transport it carefully (it stood about two feet high on a base of 14" in diameter) from Essex to Bournemouth. It arrived safely and was placed on the table with all the other entries in it's class (The whole competition is split into classes, just as in dog shows)

Then the great moment of truth came as they awaited the results. When they were announced Alan had won his class. A day later he received a further honour when he heard that the model had been placed on the 'Table d'honneur'. To gain a place on the 'Table' the exhibit must be of exceptional standard as considered by a panel of judges and at this exhibition only two were placed there from the whole exhibition. The other exhibit gained 'Best In Show', so you can almost say Alan's exhibit finished the competition as 'Best Opposite Sex'.

Alan's wife, Wendy Shipman, sent us the the above comments and we are pleased to be able to show you the results of Alan's efforts.
