We will be fundraising for LAAD to help raise money for rescuing and re homing some of the more unfortunate Afghan Hounds in the UK. There can never be enough groups doing this for such a worthy cause
The Internet Afghan Hound
Club decided that they would like to raise money for Afghan Rescue. A name was
chosen; Love An Afghan Day and it was to be run on similar lines to Red Nose
Day.
We covered the whole country. Our aim was to involve as many people as possible,
not only to raise money but also to make people more aware of rescue – and to
have fun at the same time. We set the date for Monday 27th August but obviously
not all fund raising events took place on that day.
P Croft designed a web page and Jan Fielder produced a wonderful logo.
We held an online auction which included plants, books, Laser Lite brush,
tapestry, painting, Beanie toys, Afghan models, a set of old Southern magazines
( these were very popular ) and last but by no means least, Sue and Barry Hedge
donated a weeks stay in their villa at Alicante. This was auctioned at the
Western Championship show and the successful bidder was Mr. Clay from Essex with
a bid of £200. Karen and Anouska Simpson, along with Julie Johnson held an
Exemption Show at Leeds and raised £139.57. Another Exemption show was held at
Bristol by Jan & Tim Fielder, Chris & Bob Yates, Val & Bob Buckland and Wendy &
Mike Durrant this raised £400. Val Peirce donated some lovely rosettes. Other
events included car boot sales, white elephant stall and a raffle. Bob Savage
won the first prize of £200.
Mr. Timbrell won second prize of £100 from Glos. And third prize of £50 went to
Mr. O’Donnell from Scotland. If there was an award for sales women of the decade
it would go to Vanessa Small, she sold an amazing number of raffle tickets, our
warmest thanks Vanessa.
All the money raised is to be divided equally between the Breed Club Rescue
Schemes. At the moment we have nearly £3,000.00 in the account and a pledge of
£2,000.00 from Denise Boardman ( Women Empowering Women ) which should be with
us soon. All being well the final balance will be a little over £5,000.00. We
hope to run another Love An Afghan Day in 2003 so get your thinking caps on!
The response from everyone has been overwhelming, it has pulled us all together
and many of you have offered to help with home checks, transport, foster homes
etc. You have proved that there are many of you who care passionately about the
well being of Afghan Hounds who through no fault of their own are faced with
difficult and confusing circumstances. To help them through this transition and
into a new caring home where they will be wanted and loved is what they
undoubtedly deserve.
We would like to thank you all for your support, donations, pledges and hard
work. You are all stars.
Shirley Carr.
A total of £3,503.67 was
raised for LAAD. I’m afraid we never did get the £2000 promised to us by Denise
Boardman (WEW) we received the original pledge of £250 from her.
We wrote to all the Breed Clubs to ask them if they would like a share of the
money for their rescue schemes and 7 elected to receive money from the fund. The
A.H.A. North Eastern, Northern, East of England, Southern, Western and Scottish
Rescue all received £430 each. We also made a donation of £100 together with the
Western, Southern and East of England to help rescue 2 youngsters who were
living in terrible conditions. This leaves a balance of £393.67 in the rescue
account.
Thank you everyone for all your help and support, without you it couldn’t have
happened.

Love An Afghan Day 2004
The Calendar Boys Day
It is three years ago since the first LAAD was held. This year, our second
Love an Afghan Day was given a bumper start by a very generous donation of £500
from the Southern Afghan Hound Club Rescue Fund. The Internet Afghan Hound Club
pulled out all the stops and ran five very successful auctions raising a grand
total of £1,495. Gonny from Holland joined in the fun and got sponsorship for a
tattoo, which she had done. (Rather her than me)
One thing that I’m sure everyone will remember is a certain calendar featuring
‘lads’ and their dogs. The photo shoot is a day I will always treasure. The
setting and the weather was absolutely glorious, the atmosphere very relaxed and
friendly. Our very generous hosts had excelled themselves, everything ran
smoothly. Our heartfelt thanks to the brave men and their well-behaved dogs, to
David Paton for his fabulous photographs and to his wife Diane for her world
famous front cover shot. To Jan Fielder for all the brilliant artwork and
Eleanor Wilson representing James Wellbeloved who paid for the first print run.
The calendar was unveiled at the AHA Ch. Show and raised £1,749 in just the one
day. We ordered a small second reprint of the calendar and to date it has raised
in excess of £3,300.Tricia Churchill was also very busy at that show selling
photo shoot draw tickets. David Paton had very kindly donated a photo session
and Jan Fielder a free ad in the Year Book. Tricia raised £167 and the lucky
winner was Marcelle King.
Jo Smith has been a great help with her knowledge of the Internet. She sold a
calendar on behalf of LAAD on Ebay for £102 and then a bit later another
calendar and a signed photo for £56. She has also sold a couple of other things
since. The calendars have sold world wide and again Jo has proved invaluable by
arranging payments through paypal, I have to confess, I wouldn’t have a clue

The Calendar Boys Mugshots were a great success |
Raffle tickets were sold throughout the year.
The prize money was donated by the people listed below this meant that every
ticket that was sold was clear profit. It raised £1,763. Again Vanessa Small was
‘saleswomen’ of the year along with Cath O’Donnell and Ann Hayes, thank you for
all your hard work. The winners were: first prize £300 J. Nicholas, Bristol,
Second prize £200 Carol Mather, Cyprus and third prize £100 Kim Wilkins, Stoke
on Trent. The tickets were drawn at the Western Ch. Show.
Jan & Tim Fielder, Val & Bob Buckland, Wendy & Mike Durrant and Chris & Bob
Yates organised a great Companionship Dog Show. They all worked like Trojans,
there were loads of prizes and the show ran like clockwork. A large number of
people turned up to support it. The weather was lovely and the home made
refreshments proved to be very popular. It was a very happy relaxed day and it
was great to see some of the rescue Afghans enjoying their day out. I think most
people went home with a prize. Sincere thanks to the hard working team, they
raised £660.
Later on in the year we decided to have a small number of bone china mugs made
featuring the front cover photo. At the moment we have just five left. A tombola
at the Western Ch. Show made £175. People have donated money and also lots of
really beautiful items to sell or auction all of which are very much
appreciated. At the time of writing this the money raised is in excess of
£8,500. There is still some money to come in and the accounts will be drawn up
at the start of 2005. The full details and distribution of the fund will be
published in the next Year Book and copies will also be available from me. My
thanks to Ellen Hopper for taking on this onerous task!
LAAD has been very successful this year and that is all down to your generosity,
hard work and compassion, you are all magnificent. A huge thank you to everyone
who contributed. Dogs don't ask for a lot, yet, they give us so very much,
loving us unconditionally. They deserve the very best we can give them, a safe
home, time spent with them and loads and loads of love. All they have to do with
me is look into my eyes and I melt!
