UK Afghan Hound JUDGES
Cubanba Afghan Hounds

Dr. Shona Bettany
I saw my first Afghan hound many years ago, in the 1970s in my early teens while involved with and showing my family's Irish Setters. I could never persuade my mother to let me have one, my family were GUNDOG through and through so that was that. Fast forward many (too many!) years and when asked by my partner Rory what I would like for my fortieth birthday I only wanted a Afghan hound!! We got our first Afghan hound Banba (Saxonmill Star Realta at Cubanba) and we have had much fun with her. She has been a consistent winner at Championship shows and a CC winner, she recently had a litter of puppies for us so she is on R&R for a while, but will be back in the ring soon! We are also currently campaigning our young champion dog, Ghibli (Ch Wilbus Morpheus at Cubanba JW) who has given us a wonderful ride since his debut in 2007, getting his first CC (with BOB) from Junior at Driffield Ch Show September 2007 and attaining his title in August 2008. Along the way he became top junior Afghan Hound in 2007, and sired us a lovely litter of 7 puppies to Banba in March 2008. Waiting in the wings are Ghibli and Banba's brindle children, Rian (Cubanba Ri Na Realta) and Rouge (Cubanba Dare to Dream) who make their debuts in September 2008. At home living the life of Riley is also our beloved Moley (pictured above) who doesn't grace the show ring anymore but enjoys a full and happy life of leisure.
The things that appeal to me about Afghans above all are their unique breed characteristics, especially the balanced, angulated outline, the silky topknot and glamorous coat, the arrogant demeanour and expression, the ring tail and the springy, ground covering movement with a style of high order. They seem to be an eternal paradox, which is very appealing - an elegant, stylish and silky-coated glamour puss that is also designed to be an independent, and very effective, hunter-killer. They are a truly unique and wonderful breed!
I passed my breed exam in 2007 at the AHA/SAC joint examination, and have attended three breed seminars, two with hands on. I passed my KC Conformation and Movement exam in 2005. I am on the C list for the SAC and for the MAHC.
