SHOW CRITIQUES
I greatly enjoyed my day at Kelso, a pity
that the rain came forcing us to vacate the excellent large outside ring &
continue the bitch judging inside which I am sure affected the performance of
several on the day.
Having previously voiced my concerns for the breed it was rewarding to find so
many good hounds entered that appealed to MY eye & were representative &
typical, adhering to our breed standard. My faith is somewhat restored.
There was depth of quality in a number of the senior classes, with graduate dog
& bitch & post-grad & limit bitch being exceptional, this should auger well for
our future....IF...breeders are sensible & look carefully, not only at
the dogs they are planning to breed with but also in studying the background in
pedigree analysis to perpetuate & retain the essential breed characteristics &
conformation directed by our breed standard.
Imported & established UK breeding lines can & do gel IF a little more
thought is put into such, some breeders have proven this & such was reflected in
a number of my winners on the day.
If I may indulge in some personal observation, two significant breed
characteristics caused me some concern, TAILS, including set & carriage & UNDER
JAWS, the breed standard is specific in regard to both. JAW punishing &
strong. The TAIL, set on low with a ring at the end.
I personally will accept both the loose ring or a tight donut ring and in baby
puppies tails can do some of the most strange things in some breeding lines up
until 12 months of age. My thanks to those who came along & afforded me the
opportunity of examining your precious hounds & I am sure that you ALL took
the BEST ones HOME!
MINOR PUPPY DOG (5, 1 abs) All litter mates & sired by an old favourite Khamis
Poetic Justice who I was pleased to see here today making his retirement
appearance in competition, a lovely dog who has proven his worth as a stud dog.
1. KHAMIS MONSOON Raw B/m cream , just on 6 months, pleasing head &
expression; good front assembly, deep chest & well ribbed, obviously up on his
toes at the rear at this stage; large feet, Although somewhat erratic in his
movement, but interspersed showed short bursts of excellent ground cover &
plenty of scope, very much a baby, think he will be like his dad. His tail
needs to tighten.
2. KHAMIS MEANT TO BE AT ZANJADAN. A real hairy baby this chap, in an
overcoat two sizes too big for him, with a wealth of typical monkey whiskers, a
lovely head & expression under all that facial fuzz, silver brindle, smaller
compact dog but same comments apply in regard to body conformation, albeit
shorter on the leg to his brother. More controlled in gait although moving a
little wide at the rear, should improve.
3. KHAMIS MR ZUBEDAR. A gold boy slightly longer in his body proportions
at this stage, and looking somewhat raw against his brothers , but promising ,
again that lovely head & eye. Loose in movement as I might expect at this stage
on his conformation
PUPPY DOG (5,2 abs)
1. DAMOSIL SAKARA GOLD OF JASCARAH 10mths gold, well balanced mature
puppy with good body substance & coat bloom, nice depth to chest, length of
leg & big feet, handled well & showed a good steady stride in moving . Best
puppy.
2. METWEWAND MOLEPOLE. Taller well bodied, heavily coated white/cream
boy, a wealth of beautifully prepared silky coat; somewhat plainer in head to
the winner today. At just 12 months, I feel he is beginning to go through the
adolescent stage that these taller somewhat rangier boys can do, a bit legs &
wings but he shows a good scope in movement once he got into his stride &
decided that moving around a big ring was much more fun than just standing &
getting bored with the hands on proceedings. Needs time to mature.
3. BIRKHALL ENIGMA. Raw leggy brindle, comments to above apply in regard
to development.
JUNIOR DOG (5)
1. ARKENSTONE SARAH MUKHLIS. This classic youngster had much appeal with
his distinctive houndy profile & natural coat patterning with deep red saddle;
good balanced head, strong jaw & typical expression, real arrogance & proud
in stance,& that indefinable Afghan presence. He carries his head well,
excellent strong neck, good shoulder, balanced in outline. Moved with steady
free flowing gait showing excellent drive & extension, a very typical, what some
might term, “Old Fashioned” type hound who has obviously inherited many
essential and dominant characteristics of his dam’s line as I recall judging
his G G-Dam ,Sophie at Belfast some years ago and I loved her, This boy is
very much a specialist’s hound and may have limited appeal in today's show scene
but I thought him lovely & of a type we must NEVER lose
2. DRISHAUN DAVANTE. A classic smaller compact red dog of excellent breed
type & so typical of this kennel, good body condition, depth to chest well
angulated front & rear. Not quite the scope in moving of the winner today but a
dog who should mature well, his win in the next class gave him his JW I was
told, well done.
3. MHASOUD BAROQUE. A very nice black/brindle presented a pleasing
outline in profile, well made youngster overall & in good body & coat,
Unfortunately this lad had suffered an accident with his tail prior to coming
into the ring so was reluctant to raise it in action & his hind movement was
subsequently affected but just an off day I am sure.
NOVICE DOG (3)
1. DRISHAUN DAVANTE.
2. KAZZLYN KOKO KAMPINO AT HUBBLEBUB. A nicely balanced youngster with
definitive profile & coat patterning, he moved well.
3. METEWAND MOLEPOLE.
GRADUATE DOG. (11) A really lovely class to judge, difficult hair
splitting decisions, very little separated the final 5 placings.
1. FIROS TORAN AT ZADAL JW. A classic red dog of pleasing type, well
balanced , lovely head; good neck & shoulder & front & rear angulation, just
needs to tighten in front; deep chest good strong loin,, ring tail good set &
carried well Has tremendous scope in moving once he settles, showing lift &
ground consuming coverage with minimal effort, His sire has certainly produced
some excellent stock. Considered in the challenge but still lacking in maturity
but should continue to do well.
2. WHATS IT ALL ABOUT ALFIE AT LINGARZI. Another lovely red dog, so
typical of the type that always appeals to me. Pleased in head & typical
expression lovely beard; .good head carriage ,well bodied, good balance in
profile; moved with a stylish gait.
3. DRISHAUN DECLAN. Another typical Dwayne son, so very much like his
sire this dog, of excellent breed type, good basic conformation overall & moved
out well.
POST-GRAD DOG (10)
1. AMUDARYA SHAFAYAT AT RUNNAS. A black/silver who immediately caught my
eye for his balance in outline, wonderful exotic head & eye giving a superb
expression. Pleased to find that he was as well made as he looked in profile
once I got my hands beneath his thick silky black coat, with good body & muscle
condition, Once he started to move he wanted to act up & was just too exuberant
but once his handler got him under control & he got into a natural stride he
moved with aplomb & again covered so much ground with minimal effort showing
reach & drive from the rear. Very promising.
2. THUJA ALL IN THE GAME JW (Imp NED) Another pleasing young imported dog
who has justifiably done a lot of big winning with his free flowing gait &
natural showmanship, He is well made overall & looked good stacked, was
beautifully presented & handled well. My final decision was hair splitting &
made on the fabulous eye shape & set of the winner today but two dogs who I am
sure will swap about.
3. SUKESHI VILLAGE GOSSIP. A black masked gold, slightly finer, another
beautifully constructed youngster but younger & still looking raw to above &
needs to develop more in body which will come with his breeding line. Natural
coat pattern. This dog displays tremendous style in moving ,should mature well.
LIMIT DOG (14 3abs) Another very strong class with inevitably good dogs
having to go unplaced.
1. AMUDARYA SHEKINAH AT TERSTINE
JW. Well know winning youngster, litter brother to previous class winner,
who I last judged as a raw puppy in 2004. He is immediately familiar to my eye
in “type “ and so reminiscent of the old Amudarya‘s of yesteryear, I then made
him my best puppy dog, he has gone on to even bigger wins. Today he looked
great in profile & I am sure that those who have been around long enough can
understand why he should appeal to me with his strong resemblance to Shura in
outline, tall and houndy and rangy, he has a good head & expression with
definitive chiselling & correct eye set & shape, he stands proudly. I have
frequently seen his movement let him down, not from a constructional fault just
needs his handler to take longer stride ,I do sympathise I have same problems
but today he did not put a foot wrong and moved with scope & style really
covering the ground & demonstrating just what he is capable of from his
physical make up. Considered strongly in the challenge but I still feel he needs
that extra finish & body maturity but one for the future & should gain his title
in time.
2. SUKESHI BLAISE OF GLORY. Another very well constructed young golden
dog that I judged as a youngster, who continues to mature well. He has a lovely
masculine head , deep mask & arrogant, almost disdainful expression, similar
tight dark eye to the winner, his heavy coat does obliterate his outline
somewhat and you need to get hands on to appreciate his physical attributes.
Very well balanced & in great condition, possibly one of the best muscled dogs
here today. He can sometimes be his own worse enemy when he decides he will
hang his head & not move with enthusiasm, although not quite the fluid action of
above today, he went well enough at a correct steady pace with his feet going
into the right place as befitting of his conformation.
3. MIAMARNA MOTIVATOR. Smaller black & tan dog with sound basic
conformation, not the length of leg of those above but well balanced & put up a
grand performance in style. Always handled to perfection to get the best out of
him.
OPEN DOG (6)
1. TULAK THE PATRIOT AT DARGAI ShCM CC & BOB. This is the first time I
have judged this dog & what a lovely dog he is to go over, a grizzle gold, his
outline immediately appealed, he has a classic lean head with chiselling
,strong jaw ,mandarin beard, He has a lovely eye shape & set, good length of
neck to correct lay of shoulder & front assembly, excellent rib cage, loin &
strong well angulated rear. Presented in great coat & bloom, ring tail carried
well.
He moved with a natural unexaggerated style, his handler getting the best out
of him moving him at a correct steady pace, he floated across the ring in grand
style, no hesitation in awarding him the class and subsequently the CC, his
third which makes him a well deserved CHAMPION. Congratulations to his breeder
for producing such excellent consistent type. I learn he is the third in his
litter to gain a title.
2. PHELEZZI PERSEUS. Black dog who I have long been interested in, having
judged litter mates & also placed a number of his progeny , was pleased to have
him here today to examine closely and find him in such good form. Not a tall
dog, so well balanced & sound in basic structure. He went so well for his
substitute handler today, not the panache of some and possibly does not always
do himself justice in showmanship but correct & sound & typical Afghan gait,
moved at a correct pace. I understand that this is his first show ring
appearance in some 2 years, he should be gracing our rings more often, in my
opinion would be worthy of a title & another who is certainly proving his worth
as a stud, I was pleased to award him the RCC on conformation & ring performance
today.
3. DRISHAUN SPRING AFFAIR. A most beautiful classic red, Carloway type dog I
so much admire, I have judged him as a raw Best puppy at a club CH show and
also as an adult in 2004, what can I say that has not been said before. Scores
for me in definitive type; a typical, beautiful proud arrogant & possibly
stubborn Afghan. Love him!
MINOR PUPPY BITCH (7)
1. KHORINYAS GALENA. A delightful feminine b/masked gold baby with such
poise for one so young, loved her head carriage & look at me attitude, a real
“Madam “I think? Very good conformation, chest down to her elbows & excellent
ribbing, moved steadily & true. My BEST PUPPY BITCH who just lost out to the dog
for best puppy on maturity but I consider her a good prospect for the “Upper
House given time & that certain element of luck. Yet another sired by Justice as
was the third in this class.
2. IFMARAF GO IN TO WIN. Another promising b/masked gold, of 8mths
;taller & rangier at this stage than the winner, Well constructed puppy with
all the essentials who moved soundly & with style, very promising.
3. KHAMIS MONKEY PUZZLE. A most delightful golden brindle baby of just 6
months, who much appealed, very immature to above two, I liked her front
assembly & she moved with style. I think she should be very nice if she
continues to mature along these lines.
PUPPY BITCH (4 1 abs)
1. DAMOSIL JEWEL IN THE CROWN OF JASCARAH. Litter sister to puppy dog winner
& a feminine version built on similar lines with good bone & substance.
Beautifully prepared, she moved freely with style covering a lot of ground.
2. ISTANI TRULY MADLY DEEPLY. Black/silver of lovely type, pleasing head,
somewhat apprehensive after a recent fright but as she relaxed, she displayed
the typical Afghan gait & looked the part, I thought her most promising,
persevere.
3. BIRKHALL SERENDIPITY. A very nice but raw, houndy brindle baby
& very much a baby, longer in loin, same remarks apply as to her brother.
JUNIOR BITCH (11 2abs) some lovely youngsters in this class.
1. DRISHAUN DAISYMAE AT SHIMALA. Classic red bitch so feminine & of much
appeal, litter sister to 2nd in Junior dog & very similar in physical
attributes, this lovely bitch moved very well; given the inside conditions and
showed much style, liked her a lot, went on to win novice
.
2. JHANSI J’ADORE AT NYANZA. Another lovely bitch, feminine, with a good
head & eye, good length to neck & shoulder angle, deep chest, balanced quarters.
Not quite so bold & fluid in her movement to winner but given the ring condition
she did more than enough to justify her placement in this strong class, she is
of excellent breed type.
3. JODAK ASTRACOMICAL WITH TAMAREESHA. Brindle with the most natural,
alert & arrogant air, just look at ME she said, a real Afghan in type & style
demonstrating arrogance in profile. Free moving & stylish in action, although
shorter on the leg to my personal preference but overall most promising.
NOVICE BITCH (7 1 abs)
1. DRISHAUN DAISEYMAEAT SHIMALA.
2. LEZARAH LULU AT KALUTE. Reserve in Junior, a rangier taller golden
bitch, another going through the adolescent phase, very feminine & typical &
should mature well & make an elegant adult, moved steadily & true.
3. KAZZLYN KOOLN’SASSY. b/m gold with distinctive coat patterning &
natural saddle very feminine, moved freely but carrying some extra weight, very
typey.
GRADUATE BITCH (8 1 abs)
1. BIRKHALL MEGAN. This bitch truly excited me, almost a deja vu of her
beautiful older sister that I gave the RCC to when I judged in 2003. Presented a
lovely outline, so well balanced; beautiful head & eye, aloof & dignified,
excellent front assembly; lovely depth to chest & ribbing. Her movement is sound
without being flash, she obviously did not like the tent but did more than
enough to display her excellent ground consuming gait and did raise her ringed
tail once into her stride, loved her for type & quality, Sired by Perseus.
2. KIRGHIZ JJ TOP. Yet another flashback from the past, this feminine
brindle girl is a dead ringer for her auntie K. Chasing Rainbows. She for me
oozes type & with her sparse coat furnishings, deep natural saddle & bare
pasterns nothing of her basic structure is hidden; she floated around the ring
with a natural style of high order. I could have brought this bitch home!! Very
much another specialist’s hound.
3. BIRKHALL SOPHIA. A very feminine bitch, litter sister to Megan,
possibly rangier in type, glorious head & expression, presented beautifully and
another who moved with style.
POST-GRAD BITCH (11 2 abs). Such excellent quality, so many lovely
bitches presented me with unenviable choice in placement.
1. BIRKHALL CLOUDBERRY. What a stunning bitch! The first time I have
ever seen her & she captivated me, so feminine this b/masked cream , elegant &
yet the next minute the clown, Most wonderful head, eye & expression,
beautifully made overall, excels in front assembly, good lay of shoulder, deep
chest well ribbed, short strong loin, excellent rear quarters, coat silky & in
great bloom,. She moved with style when into her full flowing gait even within
the restriction of this indoor ring, would love to see her “Go” outside. Took
the RCC today ,will watch her career with interest, on today’s performance must
have a bright future.
2. ARUSHKHAN FOR YOUR EYES ONLY A completely different type, finer made
black , such a lovely bitch, beautiful feminine head, dark eye, aloof
expression, very elegant & poised, another with that excellent free flowing
stride, presented & handled so well, her beautiful silk coat gleamed with
condition.
3. SAXONMILL STAR REALTA Another houndy feminine “Star”, black/silver of
excellent breed type, good basic construction overall & moved with style &
freedom.
LIMIT BITCH (13. 1 abs) This was THE class! Hotly contested, lovely
bitches went card less.
1. SUKESHI HEIGHT OF FASHION. I have loved this bitch since I first saw
her in the nest, for me she excels in basic conformation, no exaggerations, a
soundly constructed, well balanced “No Frills” bitch .Balanced head, with a good
strong punishing jaw, lovely dark eye, shape & set. She has excellent frontal
construction with the correct angle & length to her shoulder blade, deep chest,
strong hard well muscled loin, good well muscled hind quarters which she uses
to give lift off and drive when in full gait, She went well here today, no
“flash and dash” just correct sound economical movement. Have done her well as a
junior and pleased to award her first CC here today, she is more than worthy of
a CH title & is, I consider of the correct type to be a good breeding
proposition for the future. Good Luck.
2. ARAKI HAIRY MARY Yet another “No Frills” bitch, a real hound of good
basic structure, with correct coat patterning, deep red saddle & bare pasterns,
strong but feminine head, strong arched neck to good lay of shoulder, spring &
depth to her chest, in good condition & bloom; another with the correct lift &
floating raking stride gait so typical of our breed. I admired this bitch from
the ringside long time back, more than happy to award her place in this strongly
contested class on definitive houndy type.
3. RENZA DESIGNER RED FOR SHIMALA. Lovely red bitch so typical of her
lineage who I have judged as a youngster, she takes time to get into her stride
& raise her tail but once in her correct stride she floats, of sound
construction. A classic bitch.
OPEN BITCH (5 1 abs)
1. MIAMARNA MANDOLIN AT ASHAHNI JW. Well know bitch & worthy CH, good basic
balanced conformation with excellent head carriage & conducts herself well in
the ring, moving with style .Beautifully presented & in good physical & coat
bloom.
2. CH JALAHAR LEADING LADY WITH AZMARI. A very feminine b/masked cream
bitch that I have judged & done well for in the past, another worthy CH who
presents a lovely elegant & houndy outline, longer in the length of leg than the
winner, she is well constructed with all the essentials, moved with style but I
think she would have been better in an outside ring & who knows? Worthy
Champions both & my privilege to judge them.
3. JASCARAH BLACK VELVET. Feminine black bitch, moved ok, from memory as
my scribbled note got obliterated in the wet.
