AHCA RESCUE

(Please note these dogs are in the USA)

URGENT HELP NEEDED PLEASE

PLEASE CROSSPOST

Over the course of this past week Afghan Hound Rescue has received 60 dogs surrendered in Auburn, CA and Chambersburg, PA. In CA 42 dogs were confiscated from collector. Medical evaluations have begun and many dogs are heartworm positive and have various other health issues from minor to very serious. On Friday a litter was whelped with 5 puppies to bring the total to 47. The owner of the dogs was permitted to keep 12-15 as the complaint was for exceeding the limit which IMHO is just mind-numbing considering the condition of these dogs. More dogs may be forthcoming from this person, and there exists the possibility of additional pregnant bitches.

The 13 PA dogs were taken along with various other breeds from a pet store owner who was apparently doing their own breeding. There has been no word so far of other sighthound breeds being involved here but some of the dogs also confiscated were Chows, Cockers, Beagles and various toy breeds. Vetting of these dogs will be taking place in the coming days. Sixty-five dogs were pulled Friday with more this week as breed specific rescues take what they can and the shelter has room.

These AH rescues are coming within just weeks of 6 dogs in GA., 6 from Indiana, 4 in SC, 2 in Ohio and 13 puppies turned out on the streets from a suspected 2 litters in NC. Efforts to deal with these 31 dogs has already burdened local and national club resources. To have to deal with over 90 rescues in 2 months is catastrophic in a breed that only had 800+ registrations in 2005.

Foster homes are needed particularly in CA and financial help would be greatly appreciated. You may contact AHCA Rescue at http://www.afghanhound.net  or the CA Rescue at http://www.ahrsc.org  if you can provide any assistance.

Thank you in advance for any help you can give. Cross posting to other performance lists or breed clubs would be greatly appreciated. This is going to be an enormous effort and hopefully AH Rescue can count on support from others in the sighthound community to assist them at this time. Carole Bottari

•  Hi, this is all true-and one of the bitches had 5 puppies already. I spoke with the gal I have Edgar with-she picked up a girl-said very very sweet.....Anyways-there is going to be a wonderful Raffle at AHALI-week of Westminster-I am putting together a really nice basket including wine, leather lead, and whatever else I manage to "dig" up....If anyone is interested in donating anything-I would be more than happy to add it to the basket with a nice card saying who was donated by. This situation is going to be expensive-and money will be needed. The dogs in PA-many have stepped up and took in as Foster, while I cant do that, I thought a really GREAT raffle basket with cool stuff be a nice way to make money for the dogs-and be a nice gift for the "winning" bid!...........If anyone is interested in donating -the Show is in Feb 11th-please feel free to e-mail me merhadj@verizon.net  if folks go to Afghansonline.com  and on the home page (cover) there is a link Overwhelming Rescue in N. CA to send money. There are also pics of a few-and if the poor boy named JET isn't cause for the person responsible to go to jail for cruelty-I don't know what is. ..........I myself live in PA where the next set of Rescues came -these are the ones we are doing a 50/50 and raffles for at a up-coming Specialty-AHALI-thanks for liking the "basket of goodies " idea I am putting together, I have a few nice items for it-but would love a unique-and wonderful basket loaded with cool items to have folks bid on.......Its going to be a costly endeavor for all involved-and as I cant physically foster one-this is my way of contributing. It's an enormous effort on many parts. Most are heartworm positive, to me that's a form of abuse. She was selling in the paper the adults for 5.00 dollars-that's about 10 pounds-fighting dog bait-she should never own anything.......I thank you and Jo for Posting and donating to their cause-and Anna says a big thank you too!....Any contribution is more than welcome and I thought by asking the over-seas community we might get some things we don't see here often:)........There are quite a few items on e-bay, I will be listing a sterling Silver pin done by Marianne Giordano (MyWay afghans) today-fun fun! I and Anna and the dogs appreciate any help!

•  To the UK showing fraternity - Jo Smith (Zhaqqari Afghans)  is making up a parcel for Dottie's Auction Basket to send from Affie Lovers, if any of our members would like to contribute to it they can take bits to Manchester CH Show and give it to Jo to make one parcel up. If anyone does do that we would appreciate it if could be fairly light items please.

We hope all these dogs can be safely re homed and brought back to good health. We also hope it can't happen again. Good luck Dottie and to all the rehomers.

Some of the babies

Spice is heartworm positive, has the nastiest teeth you've ever seen, (loose teeth, bleeding abscesses gums), and the sweetest disposition ever.

Claire: Darling brindle girl..she fell asleep sitting up in the car on a 100 mile trip today...I could see her eyes closed and her head a bit wobbly.

Scarlett

More of Scarlett below

Introducing to all of you the newest temporary addition to our family.

Scarlet - a possibly 4-5 year old afghan bitch that has had several litters. Rescued along with over 100 animals from a pet store owners home (farm) living in the outdoors, getting free fed with all the other afghans with ol'Roy...There are 12-15 afghans coming out ok in this situation...
Scarlet is believed to have 10 week old chow-afghan mix babies that the owner currently was selling in her store.
The shelter is going to pursue prosecution of this woman. Even more sad is that Scarlet and at least one other of the afghans must have been sold to her. They have no dew claws, they are leash trained, jumps in and out of a car...How they ended up in a hell hole like this - who knows??

This is so sad.. but the best thing is that she is unfaced!
We are hoping for a speedy recovery and that all goes well with all the other rescued afghans.
Scarlet is becoming a poster child for the Chambersburg rescues and are "collecting" on looks alone.
She was at Bandilane today in her down vest ( borrowed from the whippet!) and people started crying seeing her. Then laughing at her when she was being silly. Then they opened the checkbook and donated to the fund. I was stunned but very grateful. The biggest challenge we have with her now is that she is completely flatfooted in the front... I hope that bringing her to the vet tomorrow for full examination after being treated for every possible internal parasite you can imagine will bring some suggestions to what to do.

Scarlet will be available for adoption to a fun home as soon as she is healthy enough to be spayed and that we know that nothing is lurking.
She is a gem for anyone that might be interested.
There are at least 12 other afghans with her background in foster care in the North East that will be available for adoption soon. We are hoping to have their stories up on the rescue website as soon as the emergency care and removal phase is over. There are over 60 afghans (...due to bitches giving birth) in Northern California from one owner that are in deep need of monetary help right now to be treated and brought back to health. Their story are on the southern California afghan hound rescue website. That situation is even worse since many of the dogs there are heartworm positive.

For donations directly to the Chambersburg group ( where Scarlet came from..) please mail a check to

Update 21st Jan - From Anna Stromberg Franzoso - our whole family and "Scarlet":

Thank you to all the friendly people in the UK and overseas that have helped in donating money and items for raffle and auctions to raise money for the Chambersburg afghans. Today another 10 (!) were removed from this hell hole. Three tiny tiny babies were found amongst the mess and they are believed to be Scarlet's missing babies. At the vets it was discovered that she must have given birth not long ago. The chow-afghan mixes seemed too old to be hers determined by our Dr Fisher. These 6-8 week old pups fit the theory. We knew about 4 or possibly 5 afghans that were coming out today - another three young bitches and the three babies were plain surprises.
We thank you whole heartedly and hope that this will only get better now.
Please spread the word and any donations are greatly appreciated. The Chambersburg afghans will soon be up on the nation wide AHCA rescue website - www.afghanhound.net
Please visit!
Sincerely,
Anna and family

Emanuela Camia of Italy are graciously donating the payments for her
ads that she are currently doing! Very nice Manu! Afghanhoundpost.com
to view the works! Jen Wager and her coworkers from Petco in Albany NY
got together and donated no-slip collars and leashes for the
Chambersburg dogs. Petco also sent adoption cupon books for future
adoptive parents. Very nice - Thank you.

We are receiveing over-seas donations for the raffle at AHALI that is
going straight to the Rescues. If the turn out is low at the show we
will post these donated rescue items on EBAY for all to bid on. Thank
you Dottie Neubert for collecting these. AHALI is still having its main
raffle table to survive as a club. It's looking to be spectacular!

Thank you everyone for your help - it really is doing the trick!

PA UPDATE - more dogs found that we did not know about!!!!

Ok,
This is the story. Today another 10 afghans were removed from the
womans place in PA.4 turned into 10.... It got ugly for a while. Three
males four bitches and they found Scarlet's babies - three tiny girls -
maybe 8 weeks old. So sad. Scarlet will be reunited with one of them
tomorrow.
Three of the bitches there was no knowledge of went north for fostering
and Savannah a light blue bitch that we knew about is also coming east
to be with Cynthia together with one of the 8 week olds. Richie
Sabatelli and Deb has one red male - he told me he is renaming him
Geronimo! One male still needs a very tender foster home. Poor soul..
Let Lisa Bryant, Ivy , Barb or myself know if you are inetersted in
fostering this broken soul.
So keep donating guys. This mess is just getting worse.  Anna

Update 26th Jan 07  Puppies and Photo's

We received tons of private emails from and off this list: this message is for everyone and feel free to cross post it if anyone feels like. I know all of the people are not members here. I am glad to report that we now have the funds thanks to the lovely Afghan fanciers in UK whom so kindly donated money for all the rescues (LAAD UK Affiliated to Affie Lovers Breed Clubs UK) to take Pippi to Dr. DeAngelis - our guru orthopedist. If someone will be able to give us answers on the questions on her leg it will be him.  She would have gone there on our cost - no matter what - because she needs it but this makes it easier on everyone!

Thank you again to all of you in UK who contributed. May Pippi be your mascot! She is very Bell Murray though:) Please see the new shots of them in Files!
I am also glad to report that if all goes well both Cali and Tallulah have forever homes and will be going shortly to join their new families!
Their mommy Scarlet - (cover girl!) is working on a portfolio that
could be used for a calendar next year! She is a primadonna and likes to play dress up. She got the green light from our darling Dr. Fisher to go off the premesis and visited with Nancy and Joe Krysiak today and I will never stop to be amazed about this little girl. She walked right in said hello, planted herself on the couch after being offered (and gladly took) cooked chicken. Lillith was great with her and they shared toys!
Nancy, Joe and I agreed tonight on that someone will be very happy and privileged to share their lives with Scarlet in the future. Few afghans I have had in my house have been so grateful, easy and funny to love!

Again, Thank you for all donations for all the rescues! Anna & Ben- foster parents
